Abstract

Aim: With this study, it is aimed to investigate the opinions of the students studying at the vocational school of health services of a foundation university on laboratory safety and their behavior in complying with the laboratory working rules.

Materials and Methods: The study is descriptive. Students who studying at vocational school of health services and receiving vocational training in school laboratories were included in the study. In the study, a questionnaire was prepared to determine the sociodemographic characteristics of the students as well as their level of knowledge about laboratory safety, and this form was used to collect the data. Percentage, frequency, and Chi-square analysis were used in the analysis of the data.

Results: 336 students participated in this study. As a result of the evaluation of the data obtained, it was determined that 51.8% of the students had received training on laboratory safety before. It was determined that the knowledge level of the students about laboratory safety was related to the type of high school they graduated from (p ≤ 0.001), the department they studied (p = 0.013), their previous experience in the laboratory environment (p ≤ 0.001) and their status of receiving laboratory safety training (p ≤ 0.001).

Conclusion: It has been determined that the views and behaviors of the students within the scope of the research on laboratory safety vary depending on whether they have received training on the subject before, and they also need information on laboratory safety.
