Abstract

Aim: This research aims to determine the factors affecting hospital preference in domestic health tourism.

Materials-Methods: The study was conducted in Istanbul in May 2016 with 550 participants. The survey method was used as the data collection tool in the study. The survey form consists of two parts. The first part included questions about sociodemographic characteristics, and the second part included questions about the factors affecting hospital preference in domestic health tourism. Data analysis was performed with SPSS 23.0 program and was studied with a 95% confidence level.

Results: 61.1% of the participants were male, 45.6% were 18-29 years old, 60.5% were married, and 65.4% had a bachelor's degree. 51.6% of the participants worked in the public sector. 74.2% of the participants had public insurance. Previous experiences were effective in the hospital selection of 93.1% of the participants. While 15.6% of the participants choose their hospital through friends/relatives/companions/advertisements, 84.4% do so because they were satisfied with the previous service. The participants responded the least to the statement “The presence of places of worship where I can fulfill my religious duties in the hospital is effective in hospital selection in domestic health tourism” (2.40±1.03), and the highest to the statement “The presence of a team of experts in the field where I will receive treatment in the hospital is effective in hospital selection in domestic health tourism” (4.73±0.74).

Conclusion: Statistically significant differences were found in hospital preferences according to the participants’ age, gender, marital status, education, employment status, experience, and health insurance type.
